The 11 Best Places to Find Affordable Furniture

Andrew Reyes  |

You need couches, tables, beds, and chairs in order to live comfortably in your house. However, furniture can be expensive and could quickly break your bank. If you know where to look, you can find furniture at a reasonable price and even use coupons or sign up for memberships to lower this already affordable price.

There are many stores that offer furniture, but don’t make a decision unless you’ve taken a look at the following retailers.

1. Overstock

This internet retailer does not have a physical store. You’ll have to visit Overstock.com or download the Overstock app to purchase anything. Once you create an account, you can view and buy everything from furniture to decor to apparel for any room. Overstock offers coupons and deals on various items, including but not limited to:

  • Patio furniture under $99;
  • Coffee tables under $150;
  • Outdoor rugs under $75;
  • Accent chairs under $200.

Overstock can afford to retail affordably because of its business model. This model includes acquiring liquidated stock from other merchandisers. Currently, Overstock offers free shipping to every U.S. state — excluding Alaska and Hawaii.

While you do not necessarily need a membership to shop on Overstock, signing up for their Club O does come with several benefits. These bonuses include a price match guarantee, 5% rewards on every purchase, and free returns. Enrolling in Club O will cost you $19.95 per year.

2. Wayfair

Wayfair is another online retailer — although they do have one store in Natick, MA. You’ll have to access the Wayfair website or download the app to buy items such as furniture for any room, decor, lighting, and appliances.

Part of what makes online retailers like Wayfair so inexpensive is that they don’t have to pay salespeople. This essentially cuts out the middleman, and these savings translate into reasonably priced merchandise.

Wayfair offers coupons, and you’ll want to check on their daily deals regularly. Another bargain to keep an eye on is their closeout deals, where you can get 80% off of:

  • Furniture for all rooms;
  • Decor;
  • Bed and bath;
  • Lighting.

Wayfair does provide a $30 annual membership, which comes with several perks, such as free shipping. Additionally, shipping for orders over $35 is free, but there is a flat shipping rate of $4.99 for orders that do not reach this limit.

3. Dot & Bo

Despite closing down in 2016, Dot & Bo bounced back and was up and running again within a year. The store is only available online, and to start shopping, you’ll have to visit the Dot & Bo website. From their website, you can browse furniture and home decor for any room and of many styles.

Be sure to check out their clearance section, where you’ll receive 80% off of chairs, sofas, tables, and more. Items are shipped out within four business days of ordering, and will be delivered within 10. Shipping anywhere in the continental U.S. will cost you $3.99.

4. HomeGoods

HomeGoods does not sell merchandise online, but you can find brick-and-mortar stores near you through their website. You can also read their blog, buy gift cards, and sign up for their rewards credit card. Additionally, HomeGoods has an app on which people post items they’ve discovered for a fair price. The app will let you know where this deal is, other stores near you, and keep you informed of new products.

Departments you’ll find in a HomeGoods store include:

  • Furniture;
  • Outdoor;
  • Lighting;
  • Bedding and Bath;
  • Dining and Kitchen;
  • Pet;
  • Decor.

HomeGoods gets inventory from over 16,000 vendors and sells it for 20% to 60% below retail price. Since they do not offer online shopping, no shipping fee is attached to purchases. However, if you find something in-store, you can have it delivered to your house — which may come with a price. HomeGoods does not offer a membership.

5. HomeSense

HomeSense is similar to HomeGoods in that it doesn’t offer online shopping. However, you can visit the HomeSense website to find stores and even take a virtual store tour. HomeSense sells some of the same things as HomeGoods and at a comparable price. HomeSense departments include:

  • Furniture;
  • Lighting;
  • Rugs;
  • Art & Decor;
  • Home & Office.

There are some differences between HomeSense and HomeGoods, however. For instance, HomeSense does not have a bed and bath or a kids section. HomeGoods does have a Celebration department, in which you can find party favors, candles, gifts, and more. If you’re looking for decor and entertainment items, you may choose HomeSense over HomeGoods. HomeSense offers a rewards credit card (the same card as HomeGoods) but does not have a membership program.

6. Ikea

You can shop Ikea both in-store and online. Ikea sells furniture, appliances, and home adornments. These items are designed by Ikea and are sold ready-to-assemble. You will get furnishings at a low price, but you will have to put it all together. Ikea products include:

  • Furniture;
  • Home decor;
  • Smart home items;
  • Pet accessories.

Ikea has stores in 52 countries and makes it a point to offer sustainably sourced items. A membership, called the Ikea Family, is available, and you can find great deals and rewards. When you have furniture shipped to your house, Ikea will charge a $5 small order fee, and based on the weight of your order, you may have to pay more.

7. Kohl’s

Kohl’s provides in-store and online shopping. You can find Kohl’s stores in every state except for Hawaii. The retailer offers affordable prices on things such as:

9. Sears

Sears is a well-known department store and has locations throughout the U.S. You can also shop via their mobile app and online at Sears.com. Many Sears stores are large, and you can find products ranging from:

  • Clothing;

  • Home decor.

Sears has a loyalty program, and you’re able to earn points for shopping, get coupons, and receive perks. The Shop Your Way membership is free to sign up for and has an annual fee of $39.

Sears does charge a delivery fee based on a number of things, including how far away you live from the closest Sears store that carries the product you ordered, whether the installation is required, and whether you choose expedited shipping.

10. Target

While Target has stores in cities all over the United States, they also provide shopping through their app and at Target.com. Target offers many products, including:

  • Clothing;
  • Bedding and bath;
  • Groceries;

To receive even more discounts and rewards, sign up for the RedCard. This card has no annual fee, and you’ll get exclusive deals at Hotels.com and Starbucks, as well as free shipping. Without a card, orders under $35 will be charged a $5.99 standard shipping fee. Shipping fees will vary depending on shipping speed, weight, order processing, and packaging costs.

11. Walmart

You can shop Walmart in-store, on their app, and at Walmart.com. Of all the stores on this list, Walmart may sell the widest variety of products, including:

You can sign up for the Walmart+ membership, Capital One’s Walmart Rewards card, and the Walmart Pay app for even more sales and perks. With these, you’ll find everything from discounts to cash-back rewards to free shipping.

Things to Keep in Mind When Shopping for Affordable Furniture

Getting the best deals on furniture will often involve doing a bit of research, sifting through the furniture section of the websites above, taking advantage of rewards and discounts, and comparing prices. You can prepare to find the best prices on furniture by considering several aspects of shopping.

Shop at Thrift Stores

Many times, you’ll find furniture from these stores at a thrift store. Other times, you may be pleasantly surprised by a chair or sofa that isn’t brand-name and from a retail store. Whatever the case, thrift stores are a great way to find furniture at an affordable price, even if it is slightly used.

Use Coupons and Cashback Sites

Experienced couponers will tell you that you can save a considerable amount on almost anything by using coupons — including furniture. Learning the art of couponing isn’t difficult, and many of the stores above provide them for you online, so you don’t have to cut up your magazines and newspapers.

Cash-back sites are also a great way to save money. These sites work with retailers, and when you purchase something through a cash-back site, the site will earn a commission from the retailer. A percentage of the commission then goes back to you. Taking advantage of cash-back sites is a great way to earn some money back for your expense.

Mind Your Budget

Making and sticking to a budget is a good practice for anyone’s finances. Factoring in things such as shopping into your budget will let you know exactly how much money you can spend on furniture. Additionally, living on a budget helps you identify categories you are spending too much money on. Eliminating these expenditures will help you save money and use it elsewhere, such as on furniture.
