How to Send Money on PayPal With and Without an Account

Dayton Uttinger
PayPal

Sending money through PayPal is generally painless, especially in the age of digital payments, but sometimes you might be a little unsure as to what’s exactly happening with your money. This process can be a little convoluted if one person in the transaction doesn’t have a PayPal account. However, whether you both currently have PayPal accounts or not, PayPal can be a secure way to transfer money from a credit card to another person, although the recipient will likely have to pay some processing fees. If you want free transfers, you’ll have to link your bank account to a PayPal account.

Sending Money Through PayPal

Assuming that you have an account, sending money through PayPal isn’t too complicated, although there are several ways to do it.

Send Money to PayPal With Credit Card

If you’ve linked your credit card to your PayPal account, then it will be charged just as if you were using it at a store. While you can’t use a cash advance to load up your PayPal account, you can purchase from any retailer that accepts PayPal through your credit card if you wish.

PayPal Account Payments

You might prefer to pay directly from your PayPal account instead of also involving your credit or debit card. That’s easy enough to do. You just load up your PayPal account with money from a linked bank account, and you’ll be good to go.

PayPal Money Transfers

PayPal also supports simple money transfers. However, take note that you can’t do this using a credit card. You’ll have to do so using a linked bank account instead. This usually takes a business day to process, but it is free.

PayPal Instant Transfers

If time is of the essence, you can use PayPal Instant Transfers, which only take a couple of minutes to process. For 25 cents per transfer, you can instantly transfer money through your debit card rather than a linked bank account.

How to Send Money Through PayPal Without an Account

If you don’t have a PayPal account, then you won’t be able to link up your bank account. That eliminates some of the free options that are detailed above. However, it’s still possible to send money through PayPal without an account.

Paying With a Credit Card Without a PayPal Account

You can use your credit card to pay someone else, even if you don’t have a PayPal account yourself. If the recipient does have an account, they can receive your money through PayPal, and it will just show up as a normal transaction on your credit card statement.

If neither of you have a PayPal account, you can still pay them through PayPal, as long as you have their email address or phone number. The recipient will have to open an account to access that money.

Receiving Money From Someone Without a PayPal Account

If you’re a business looking to use PayPal to secure payments, you don’t need to worry about alienating people without an account. Just make sure to have the PayPal Account Optional feature turned on, and customers will still be able to pay with their credit cards through PayPal.

It’s certainly easier and cheaper to use PayPal if you have an account, but there are ways of getting around it if you really don’t want to sign up. This is because your credit card is still being charged, even if you use PayPal as a middleman. It is a convenient way to transfer money electronically, but even more so if you get an account.
