What Credit Cards Does Sam’s Club Take?

FT Contributor  |

Sam’s Club is a membership-based discount warehouse club. You may have to pay an annual membership fee, but if you shop regularly, the savings you’ll get from buying in bulk will make up for the membership cost. Need to know what credit cards Sam’s Club takes? The good news is, Sam’s Club accepts more payment methods than Costco. Read on to find out what they are.

How Can You Pay at Sam’s Club?

Sam’s Club makes payment convenient for customers. If you think that a credit card is your best option, you’re in luck. The retailer accepts credit cards from all major card providers, including Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.

Sam’s Club only accepted Discover cards up until 2006, but gradually added other cards to stay competitive with other retailers. The warehouse club is owned and operated by Walmart, so you can also pay with your Walmart store credit card.

The retailer offers the Sam’s Club Credit Card for regular shoppers. It has no annual fee, allows you to earn 1% cash back on store purchases, and will also work as your membership card. Store credit cards work differently from a regular credit card. You’ll only be able to use the Sam’s Club Credit Card for purchases at Walmart and Sam’s Club.

If you’d rather avoid having several store credit cards to pay off, you can apply for the Sam’s Club Mastercard, with no annual fee and all the same benefits. And you’ll be able to use it anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

Other Sam’s Club Payment Methods

To avoid racking up your credit card bill with Sam’s Club purchases, there are other payment methods you can use:

  • Cash;
  • Check;
  • Most PIN-based debit/ATM cards;
  • Prepaid credit cards;
  • Walmart and Sam’s Club Gift Card/e-Gift cards.

You may buy a Sam’s Club Gift Card in any amount between $10 and $500. A gift card never expires and can be reloaded as needed. You could even use your Walmart or Sam’s Club Gift Card at Walmart and Sam’s Club gas stations.

For online purchases, you’re able to pay with all major credit cards, Sam’s Club and Walmart store cards, Sam’s Club and Walmart Gift or e-Gift cards, and Digital Wallet Service at checkout.

Does Sam’s Club Take Food Stamps?

Sam’s Club takes food stamps and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) cards, also known as Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards. Sam’s Club focuses on stocking everyday staples in bulk and at discounted prices for all customers, including lower-income families and individuals. Their company slogan is “Savings Made Simple.”

However, you must be a member to shop, even if using food stamps or a SNAP card. Sam’s Club no longer offers Guest Membership or Invitation to Shop 24-hour passes.

Should I Pay With My Sam’s Club Credit Card?

Paying for your purchases with a credit card is convenient, as long as you’re responsible with your credit card spending and pay your credit card bills on time. Not doing so could cost you late fees and finance charges, offsetting any savings you earned from shopping in bulk at Sam’s Club.

Worried about spending more than you could afford and getting in debt? You may want to pay in cash, with a prepaid gift card, or by using your debit card. If you were wondering whether Sam’s Club takes EBT, they do. Make your shopping list ahead of time and stick to it so you can avoid spending money on impulse buys.
