What Is a Routing Number?

A routing number, also known as an ABA number, has nine digits. These numerals identify the bank so that it can send and receive money from other banks and financial institutions.

In a sense, a routing number is like an address for the bank. The first four digits of this number represent the federal banking district where the bank is located. There are 12 different districts in the country. The second four numbers identify the bank itself, while the final digit is a check that ensures that the previous eight numbers are correct.

Why Would You Need a Bank’s Routing Number?

One of the most common uses for a bank routing number is to set up a direct deposit. Your employer can then send your paycheck directly to your bank so that you do not have to deposit a paper check. When you get a tax return, the IRS can likewise send it directly to your bank. You can also pay taxes to the IRS using a transfer that requires the routing number.

In addition to providing a routing number, you also need to give an account number so that the bank knows where to direct the money once it reaches its system.

You can transfer money between banks using an automated clearing house (ACH) transfer or a wire transfer. You can move money from another bank account that you own, or clients, business partners, or others can send money if you give them your routing and account numbers.

Finally, you may use your bank’s routing number information and your account number to set up automatic bill paying for utility bills, mortgage payments, credit card payments, and other monthly bills.

For most people, a personal check is the most straightforward way to find your routing number. It’s the nine-digit number on the bottom-left of the check. The routing number always has nine digits. The account number can have a different number of digits. It sits directly to the right of the routing number on the bottom of the check.
