What Employee Benefits Does Apple Offer?

With all of its burgeoning technology, any job at Apple is exciting, but it’s important first to consider the employee benefits that you will receive as a member of the team.

Even though a job may seem like the right fit, think about the job benefits you will negotiate after you receive your job offer. Four out of five employees today report that employee benefits are more important than pay, which is another reason why Apple is such a popular employer today.

Apple offers a well-rounded employee benefits program that competes with other leading employers such as Marriott and Best Buy. In 2014, CEO Tim Cook revamped the program to provide expanded coverage for Apple employees.

Apple is notoriously private about its employee benefits program, but we are able to get the scoop on all of the exclusive perks through real Apple employee feedback on sites like Glassdoor and Indeed. 

Apple Careers and Job Outlook

Providing over two million U.S. jobs in all 50 states, Apple is an American powerhouse with 80,000 employees and an additional 1.53 million jobs created through domestic suppliers. Many employees enjoy the option to work from home, although the privilege greatly depends on your role within the company.

There is no missing the bright-eyed good humor of an Apple store employee. Apple employs many other kinds of professionals, too, with job roles extending far beyond the retail sector. Information technology specialists make up a good portion of Apple jobs, but there are many other positions in diverse areas like finance, legal, and global security. You could even find a role in human resources, managing the employee benefits you yourself will come to enjoy.

No matter your position, there are only great things to come with a company that boasts a 4.1 out of 5.0 rating on Glassdoor and 1,500% employee growth since 1998. Apple also makes a practice of promoting from within, offering tremendous training and job advancement opportunities for employees of all titles.

With a solid job outlook, jobseekers naturally look to compare the employee benefits package that Apple offers with the benefits offered by other companies.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is a top priority for many professionals when it comes to employee benefits; healthcare today is simply too expensive to go without insurance coverage.

Full-time employees enjoy health insurance from Apple with vision and dental coverage. While coverage is said to vary by country, these plans offer excellent coverage with very low premiums at just a fraction of the cost of a normal policy.

Apple has taken a proactive approach to employee health through its wellness center, available exclusively to Apple employees. Located within its Cupertino, California headquarters, employees have access to several different doctors such as chiropractors, physical therapists, and mental health counselors. Employees report a maximum wait time of just five minutes.

Time Off

A healthy work-life balance is crucial for any employee, which is why paid time off (PTO) is such an important part of employee benefits. Paid time off includes 12 days for new hires, but employees report to Glassdoor that PTO increases with your employment.

Employee benefits such as paid time off can often depend on how long an employee has been working for the company, and that seems to be the case at Apple. Some employees report paid time off ranging from 12 to 22 days, while others report 30 days of PTO.  

Maternity Leave

Apple offers a very unique maternity leave policy compared to the standard format of other companies. While many employers offer a flat allowance of just a few weeks, Apple takes a different approach.

Apple-employed birth mothers receive a generous maternity policy with four weeks of maternity leave before birth and then 14 weeks afterward. If you still need more time, you have the option of six additional weeks of unpaid leave. Besides six weeks of paid parental leave, there is a new kind of family benefit.

Apple joins other employers such as Facebook and Google in providing support to female employees who choose to freeze their eggs. By providing this kind of reimbursement and support, younger employees can plan for the future without affecting their careers.  

Retirement

You will not be able to work for Apple forever, so it’s important to consider what kind of 401(k) retirement plan, if any, is available.

At Apple, employees receive a retirement plan that includes 50% 401(k) matching for up to 6% of your total salary.

Other Apple Company Benefits

Health insurance and retirement are standard employee benefits that employers generally offer, but Apple doesn’t stop there.

There is company-matching for employee contributions to philanthropic causes, also matching up to $25 per hour of employee non-profit work, up to $10,000.

Employee Discounts 

One of the perks that employees talk about the most on Glassdoor are the discounts on company products. This includes 50% off most Apple software and annual 25% discounts on Apple’s most coveted products: iPods, computers, and iPads.

For your 90-day employment anniversary, Apple will reward you with either $250 off a new iPad or $500 toward a new Mac. You can reuse this perk every three years.

Tuition Reimbursement

Employees in all different positions can receive up to $5,250 in tuition costs. There is also an on-campus training center, affectionately called Apple University by employees, which is designed to help you become well-versed in Apple’s history and mission.

Gym Credit

Employees receive a $300 gym credit each year to put toward their personal health and wellness.

Stock Purchase Program

Apple is a thriving company, and its employees can take part in that success through the company’s stock purchase plan. With available stock grants, employees have the opportunity to buy discounted stock.

Commuter Benefits

If you work in Cupertino, you’re in luck. Apple offers exclusive shuttle service to its headquarters from the Bay Area. Employees also report on Glassdoor that they receive a monthly commuter stipend of $100 each month to use toward commuter costs such as bus and train passes.

Free Apples

Apple gives its employees apples. Better yet, this healthy (and free!) workplace snack promotes the company’s health and wellness initiatives while also supplying employees with an energy boost during the day.

Subsidized Eateries

Although a great snack, Apple’s apples do not constitute a full meal, but there are still plenty of options for your next meal. Apple offers subsidized eateries so you can grab lunch or dinner without having to leave the office.

Cafe Mac is Apple’s own on-site eatery in Cupertino, dishing up high-quality, home-cooked meals and offering low, subsidized costs for employees. Apple provides a unique payroll deduction plan that allows employees to pay for their lunch and enjoy a tax break at the same time. Employees report to Glassdoor that engineers and iOS and OS X teams often eat for free.  

Employees also clamor for Apple’s beloved “Beer Bash,” a series of ongoing social events dedicated to fun and camaraderie. These events often feature celebrity guests and performers, and they give employees a chance to break free from work and mingle with their colleagues over free beer and appetizers. Best yet? It’s all free.
