How to Write an Excellent Customer Service Resume

A good customer service resume is essential if you want to find a job in customer service. This applies to a wide variety of positions, including technical support representative, receptionist, client services coordinator, concierge, and call center agent.

Customer service representatives typically serve as a touchpoint between the company and the customer. Therefore, customer service representative resumes should focus on several soft skills that apply to interpersonal interactions.

How to Organize a Customer Service Resume

While there isn’t a universal format for a resume, there are several major elements that are traditionally included, such as sections for skills, education, and experience. Each of these should contain information that is uniquely tailored for the customer service industry.

Header

Your resume should start with a header. This provides your name and basic information. It goes at the top of the page, is either centered or left-aligned, and should provide the following information:

  • Your first and last name.
  • Your address.
  • Your phone number and email address.
  • Any applicable links, such as your LinkedIn url.

If you feel that sharing your entire address could hurt your chances of getting a position out of state, you can replace your address with “Open to relocation,” or something along those lines.

Introduction

An introduction should follow underneath the header. This is a brief paragraph that serves as an opening statement for the more detailed contents that follow.

Don’t title this “introduction.” Instead, use something like, “About Me,” or “Objective.”

Then briefly outline any essential information the recruiter should be aware of. This can be career goals, experience, or skills that are particularly relevant to the position you’re applying for. For example, “Customer service representative with three years of experience,” is a relevant piece of information that could be included in an introduction.

Skills

The skills section of your resume should list both your hard skills and soft skills. Make sure to highlight technical skills, interpersonal skills, and anything else that would be particularly relevant to a customer service position. Hard skills to consider include:

  • Typing.
  • Microsoft Office or Google Suite.
  • Video chat software.
  • Email composition.
  • Other applicable computer competencies.
  • Multiple languages.

Soft skills are a critical part of a customer service resume. Soft skills to consider include:

  • Conflict resolution.
  • Active listening and attentiveness.
  • Politeness.
  • Persuasion.
  • Up-selling.
  • Empathy.

Most of your soft skills should focus on communication, as it is a primary requirement in most customer service fields.

Read the job description carefully when applying as well. This will help you tailor your skills section to include specific hard and soft skills that a company may desire their customer service representatives to possess.

When listing your skills, create a simple vertical list or use bullet points to organize things in a neat and professional manner. Consider listing your most applicable, sought-after skills first.

Education

Postsecondary education is often not required for customer service positions. Nevertheless, any academic experience should still be highlighted, as it demonstrates to recruiters that you take commitment seriously. Education can include any reasonable form of college, trade schools, or other certifications.

When listing your education, make sure to include the following information for each item:

  • The name of the institution you attended.
  • The degree or certification.
  • The school location.
  • The years you attended school.

If you feel you do not have enough postsecondary education to fill out this section, you can omit it entirely.

Experience

Under the experience section, you should list all applicable professional experiences. If you spent time working the register at a pizza shop in high school, list it. If you spent time roofing houses, leave that off.

Format each experience as follows:

  • Begin with the company name and your job title.
  • Include the dates when you were employed.
  • Add a handful of achievements (bullet points work well) that specifically reinforce why you’re a good fit for the position you’re applying for.

List your experiences in reverse order, beginning with the most recent. If you don’t have any relevant experience, you can leave this section out.

References

If you include a section with references, do so on a separate document. List each reference’s information as follows:

  • Their name.
  • Their job title.
  • Their company.
  • Their phone number.
  • Their email address.
  • Their physical address.
  • A brief description of your connection with them (e.g. you worked together).

When selecting references, make sure to look for qualified candidates. Friends and family should be avoided on your reference list. Instead, look for bosses, professors, colleagues, and other professionals who you trust and who are willing to give you a positive reference.

Customer Service Resume Writing Tips

Here are a few additional tips to keep in mind while writing your customer service resume:

  • Keep your writing consistent, direct, and concise: Don’t go off on rabbit trails, include irrelevant information, or be too wordy.
  • Make sure to communicate customer service-focused career objectives: This demonstrates your commitment, long-term focus, and work ethic.
  • Carefully read over the job description for keywords: Incorporating keywords like “teamwork” or “communication skills” in a job description can show you have what the hiring manager is looking for. Integrating these keywords into your resume will help you get past automated applicant tracking (ATS) software.
  • Consider using a template: However, don’t copy anything too closely. Remember to make your own resume unique.
  • Include action verbs: Using strong words like “listen,” “sold,” “managed,” and “trained” can add more emphasis to your resume.
