How to Write a Waitress or Waiter Resume

If you’re looking for a server job, it’s important to be prepared with a well-organized and professional resume. There may be numerous other job applicants to a single waitstaff position so displaying your unique skills through an impressive resume is crucial to catching the eye of the hiring manager.

Whether you have serving experience or you’re switching careers, it’s important to highlight the personality traits and skills you possess that make you a good fit for the role. By learning about the information you should include and how to format your resume appropriately, you may find it easier to create a winning resume.

How to Organize a Waitress or Waiter Resume

When organizing your resume for a waitress or waiter position, consider the role itself and the skills and experience you’ll need to emphasize. While your resume is unique to your experiences, there are key components that must be included on the document, no matter what type of role you’re applying for.

Header

Your header is the first section on your resume and it provides important information on how the hiring manager can get ahold of you. Keep your header brief but be sure to include the following information:

  • Your name.
  • Your address.
  • Your phone number.
  • Your email address.
  • Professional social media profile links, if applicable.

Introduction

You can structure your introduction in one of three ways:

  • A career objective: Provide a brief description of your career goals, how you plan to achieve them, and the skills you have that make you confident you can reach these goals.
  • A summary of your qualifications: Offer a synopsis of your personality traits and skills that qualify you for the position.
  • A professional profile: Highlight your experiences and past duties that gave you the knowledge and skills needed to perform the role successfully.

As a server, you’re mainly working for tips, so your personality and work ethic are important in this role. No matter which type of introduction you choose to use, emphasize your experiences interacting with people and in the service industry.

Skills

Your previous experiences determine the abilities you can include in the skills section of your resume. If you’re attempting to obtain a job as a waitress or waiter, highlight your social and service skills. While other attributes, such as technology proficiency or organization, are also important, hiring managers are mostly interested in how you interact with people.

Some of the most important skills a hiring manager may be looking for in a server include the following:

  • Time management.
  • Math.
  • Teamwork.
  • Sales.
  • Communication.

Consider skills you’ve learned through education, jobs, and other social interactions when listing them in this section. However, only list the skills you have that relate to the position and that you think a hiring manager would desire in a waitress or waiter.

Education

Most employers don’t have educational requirements for wait staff. However, if you’ve completed high school or college, include it in your education section. For each degree you’ve earned, provide the following information:

  • The name of the school.
  • The degree you earned and your major or specialization.
  • The year you graduated.
  • Any relevant coursework related to the position.

In this section, you may also include certifications or training you completed related to serving, such as completing a basic sommelier course or earning a food handler certification.

Experience

In the experience section of your resume, provide information on past jobs. If you’ve never held a serving job in the past, consider other jobs you’ve had and how they relate to serving, such as customer service or sales positions.

It’s important to only include the experiences you’ve had that somehow relate to serving or show how you’ve developed skills that make you a good fit for the role. For each past job that you’d like to include in this section, provide information on the:

  • Company name.
  • Job title.
  • Dates you worked there.
  • Duties you performed.

References

A hiring manager may ask you to list professional references. These are people you worked with in the past, including coworkers or supervisors, who can offer information on your skills and experience. In most cases, you’ll need to provide three professional references.

If you don’t have three professional references to provide, you may need to include personal references. These are people you haven’t worked with but who you are close with and can offer information on your work ethic or personality, such as family friends or neighbors.

For each reference, provide the following information:

  • The person’s name.
  • Their company and job title or how they know you.
  • Their contact information, including a phone number and email address.

You can provide your references separately from your resume if the hiring manager requests them.

Waitress or Waiter Resume Writing Tips

As you create your resume, it’s important to:

  • Tailor your resume to the job: Consider the specific service position you’re applying for and highlight the skills you have that directly relate to the position. For example, if you’re applying to serve at a steakhouse, highlight your past experience in the same type of establishment and your knowledge of steakhouse menus.
  • Showcase your skills as they relate to the role: Even if you don’t have specific server experience, you can still showcase the skills you have that are needed in this role, such as interpersonal or problem-solving skills.
  • Use action verbs throughout your resume: When you use action verbs in your introduction and to describe your experiences, it keeps the reader’s attention and assigns strong associations to these skills and duties.
