How to Write a Teacher Assistant Resume

If you’re looking for a role as a teacher assistant, one of the most important tasks you’ll face is to create an effective resume. Your resume should show off your unique skills and experiences that qualify you for the position.

An impressive resume relates the skills you have directly to the teacher assistant role to catch the eye of your potential employer. Before you apply for promising job opportunities, it’s important to understand what you should include in your resume so you can stand out from other job candidates.

How to Organize a Teacher Assistant Resume

While you should create a resume that shows off your personality and experience, there are several components that you must always include in the document, no matter what position you’re applying for. Be sure you include the following sections so you can provide adequate information about yourself and your background while adhering to proper resume formatting.

Header

Your header is a crucial component of your resume and should come first, since it provides your contact information. In your header, be sure to include your:

  • Full name.
  • Address.
  • Phone number.
  • Email address.

If you have professional social media accounts, you can also include links to your profiles. Feel free to use a format that expresses your personality. However, make sure the font is easy to read and that you follow the same format throughout the other sections in your resume.

Introduction

Use the introduction section of your resume to impress your potential employer by showing your ambition to become a teacher assistant or your qualifications. You can choose one of three different strategies when creating your introduction:

  • Career objective: Briefly explain your career goals as a teacher assistant and beyond. Emphasize your motivation and plan to achieve these career goals.
  • Professional profile: If you’ve had past professional experiences, describe how your experiences have prepared you to take on a role as a teacher assistant.
  • Qualification summary: Highlight the personality traits you possess and the background you have and explain how it relates to the duties you’ll perform as a teacher assistant.

No matter which strategy you choose to follow in your introduction section, be sure you keep it brief while relating your objectives, professional experiences, or qualifications back to the job description.

Skills

The skills you include in the next section of your resume depend on your experiences. A resume for a teaching position should emphasize the abilities you have as they relate to teaching and interaction. If you feel you possess these skills, it’s beneficial to highlight your mastery of:

  • Communication.
  • Problem-solving.
  • Patience.
  • Creativity.
  • Teaching.

Depending on the type of teacher assistant role you’re applying for, you may also want to accentuate your knowledge of specific subjects or interaction with children.

Education

In most cases, you aren’t required to hold a degree to become a teacher assistant. However, a high school diploma may be required. If you’ve earned a high school diploma, in the education section of your resume include the:

  • Name of the school.
  • Degree you earned.
  • Year you graduated.
  • Coursework you completed that’s relevant to the position.

If you’re currently in school, create an entry for your school and explain that you’re still pursuing your degree. In this section, you can also include any certifications or licensure that’s relevant to the position, such as first aid or child care.

Experience

The experience section of your resume is reserved for past jobs, internships, or volunteer opportunities you had. For each experience that’s relevant to the position, include:

  • The name of the company.
  • Your position.
  • The dates you worked there.
  • A bullet-point list of your duties and responsibilities.

References

A potential employer may request references, which are people who can provide exclusive information on your character and experience. A professional reference is a person you worked with, such as a coworker or boss, who can give information on your skills and work ethic. A personal reference is a person you know who you haven’t worked with, such as a neighbor or friend, who can offer information on your personality and abilities.

Try to provide three professional references but include personal ones if you don’t have enough past coworkers to include. When listing your references, include the person’s:

  • Name.
  • Company and job title or relation to you.
  • Phone number.
  • Email address.

You may need to include your references on a separate document. While three references is customary, follow the potential employer’s request and provide the exact number requested.

Teacher Assistant Resume Writing Tips

When you create your teacher assistant resume, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Use action verbs to describe your duties: When explaining the duties you performed in past jobs, it’s engaging and impressive for the reader when you use action verbs.
  • Highlight relevant skills: You may have developed a laundry list of skills through past experiences, but it’s important to only emphasize the skills that relate to the job you’re applying for.
  • Tailor your resume to the position: Creating a generic teacher assistant resume for every position you apply for won’t help you stand out from other job candidates. Create a unique resume for each open position that’s tailored directly to the role itself.
  • Review and edit your resume: When applying for a job in the teaching field, grammar and spelling are key. Review your resume multiple times for errors before submitting it to potential employers.
