How to Write a Product Manager Resume

Whether you’re looking for a new position as a product manager or you’re making a career change, it’s important to create a resume that shows off your unique skills and experience. Organizing and creating an impressive resume is challenging, especially when you’re attempting to show why you’re a good fit for such a dynamic role. It’s important to craft a resume that’s sure to attract potential employers and highlight the skills you have that qualify you for the position.

How to Organize a Product Manager Resume

Your resume should reflect how your experiences have shaped you into the perfect fit for the role you’re applying for. Creating a resume that’s unique to your personality traits, skills, and experience is important so you can distinguish yourself from the crowd of other job applicants. However, when you format your resume, there are certain sections you must include to provide a potential employer with specific information about you.

Header

Your resume should start with a header, since it provides your contact information. In the header, be sure to include your:

  • Full name.
  • Address.
  • Phone number.
  • Email address.
  • Additional contact information, if needed.

You can design your header to fit your style, but ensure the font and format you choose is easily readable and matches the other sections of your resume.

Introduction

Use the introduction section to communicate what you’re looking for, your career goals, or why you’d be a good fit for the position. You can choose one of three strategies when creating your introduction:

  • A career objective: If you decide to write an objective in this section, briefly outline your career goals and how you plan to reach these goals.
  • A summary of qualifications: If you have extensive qualifications for the role, use the introduction section to provide a synopsis of your qualifications and skills.
  • Professional profile: A professional profile gives a succinct summary of your professional career as it relates to the position you’re applying for.

If you have substantial experience and skills that relate to the position, you should consider providing a summary of qualifications or professional profile. However, if you’re switching careers or don’t have much experience related to the role, consider outlining your career objective in the introduction section.

Skills

Your skills section should be formatted as a bullet-point list. The skills you include are entirely dependent on your experience. Review the job description to better understand the skills that are important in this role. Generally, a product manager should possess skills in:

  • Leadership.
  • Marketing.
  • Multi-tasking.
  • Organization.
  • Time management.
  • Negotiation.
  • Finance.

Education

Most employers require product managers to hold bachelor’s degrees in business, management, or a related field. In the education section of your resume, include information on your degree, including your major, the name of your school, and the year you graduated. If you have additional management, software, or finance certifications, include them in this section as well.

Experience

In the experience section of your resume, you’ll provide information on past jobs. To keep your resume relevant, only provide information on positions you held that relate to the product management position. For every job you include, provide the:

  • Company name.
  • Position you held.
  • Dates you worked there.
  • Duties you performed.

Begin with your most recent job and provide information on your other past jobs chronologically.

References

A potential employer may ask you to list your references. A professional reference is a person you worked with in the past, such as a coworker or supervisor, who can provide positive information on your skills and experience. A personal reference is a person you know who can offer insight on your personality traits and work ethic, such as a family friend or neighbor.

Provide the exact number of references the potential employer asks for. If a certain number wasn’t requested, provide three references. Try to only provide professional references if possible and include the following information for each one:

  • Full name.
  • Company and position (or how the person knows you if it’s a personal reference).
  • Phone number.
  • Email address, if available.

If your references are requested, you may need to include this information in a separate document when you submit your application to a potential employer.

Product Manager Resume Writing Tips

When you apply to a product manager position, it’s important to:

  • Outline the skills you possess as they relate to the position.
  • Tailor your resume for the specific employer and industry you’re applying for, and use keywords from the job posting.
  • Use action verbs in your resume when you describe the duties you performed in past positions.

Take the time to edit your resume and ensure your grammar, spelling, and formatting are correct and congruent before submitting it.
