There are a wealth of jobs available in the world of marketing. From social media to email marketing, search engine optimization, and advertising, you’ll find a variety of positions when it comes to careers in marketing.

Many people seek careers in marketing because of the opportunity to make a substantial income. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the average marketing manager’s salary to be $132,620 annually. They also estimate employment in the marketing industry to grow by 8% over the next eight years. This means an opportunity for the inexperienced and room to advance for marketing professionals.

To get a job in marketing, you’ll need a professional resume that stands out from the rest. This guide will explain how to write a marketing resume, along with tips on how to format it and what to include, plus a marketing resume template to base your own off of.

How to Organize a Marketing Resume

There are many different ways to format a resume. However, a resume should always include the following key sections.

Header

The header portion of your resume is where you should list your full name, address, phone number, and email.

Use a professional email address — not a personal or inappropriate one, as this can deter the hiring managers from bringing you in for an interview.

Place your header information at the top of the resume, either center or left-aligned. Bold your name to help it stand out, and since this is a creative industry, you may be able to get away with using a decorative border around your name to help attract attention.

Introduction

In the world of marketing resumes, this section is typically titled “Objective” or “About Me” instead of “Introduction.” Its main purpose is to provide a short opening statement that explains who you are and what you hope to get out of a career with the company you are applying to.

This section should be a brief paragraph — a sentence or two — summarizing who you are as a marketing professional and what you want to accomplish by working in a particular role. Remember to change your objective for every job that you apply for.

Skills

In the skills portion of your marketing resume, briefly summarize the hard and soft skills you possess. Hard skills that marketing professionals should have include:

  • Data analysis.
  • Software proficiency.
  • Mathematic calculations.

The soft skills marketers need include:

  • Creativity.
  • Communication.
  • Willingness to work well alone or in a team setting.

Highlight each type of skill on your resume using bulleted lists to justify your candidacy.

Experience

The experience section of your resume is useful in demonstrating what you can bring to the role you are applying for. List any relevant positions you have held, whether they are current jobs or those from the past. Include the following details of your experience:

  • The position you held.
  • The company you worked for.
  • The dates you worked there.
  • A bulleted list of your responsibilities.

List these experiences in reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent job and working your way backward in time.

Education

Your education is another important component of your resume. Most marketing companies like to see that you have at least a bachelor’s degree in the field.

Include the name of the school you studied at, your major of study, and the date that you graduated or expect to graduate. If you studied any minors, list those in this section as well.

References

When it comes to standing out from other applicants, references can be extremely useful.

A good professional reference is someone you worked for or with in the past. It could be a former boss, colleague, or even a college professor in some cases. Avoid listing friends and family members as references — they won’t be able to speak to your professional experience.

When listing professional references, include the person’s name, their relationship to you, and their contact information.

To craft a professional marketing resume, adhere to the following tips:

  • Be consistent and direct in your writing: Hiring managers don’t have a lot of time, so it’s important to make a good impression quickly and easily.
  • Include a portfolio: If you have projects that highlight your experience, include them with the submission of your resume. This further demonstrates your ability and is especially favorable for landing marketing roles.
  • Use action verbs: Doing so will indicate that you have strong experience and are confident in your ability to meet the needs of the job.
