How to Register to Vote in South Carolina

You can register to vote online in South Carolina with the Election Commission if you have a valid identification card or driver’s license issued by the state. The address on your ID or license must be correct to use the online voter registration service. If not, you must change it with the DMV before attempting to register to vote online.

You can also fill out a paper voter registration form and mail it, fax it, or bring it to your county board of voter registration to complete the voter registration process. If you prefer to complete the voter registration process in person, visit your county board of voter registration and provide your South Carolina driver’s license or ID card. You may be asked to complete a voter registration form in person.

Am I Registered to Vote in South Carolina?

To check if you’re registered to vote in South Carolina, use the Election Commission’s online voter information request. To pull up your record, you must provide:

  • The county you live in;
  • Your first name;
  • Your last name;
  • Your date of birth.

Your record shows if you’re registered to vote and displays the address associated with your record. If you need to update your address but you live in the same county, complete a voter registration change of address form and mail it to your county board. If you need to update your address to a different county, you must re-register to vote with the state.

Early Voting in South Carolina

Early voting is not available in South Carolina. You can request an absentee ballot if you have a valid reason you cannot visit a polling place on election day. Acceptable reasons may include that you’re disabled or attending school out of state. Request an absentee ballot through your county board of voter registration no later than four days before the election.

To participate in an election, you must register to vote at least 30 days before the election day. If you mail in your voter registration application, it must be postmarked at least 30 days before the election.
